The process of curing and fermentation is a lengthy and complex procedure. Most cigar tobaccos are cured in curing barns with carefully monitored temperatures and humidity levels. After curing, the tobacco is ready for the fermentation process. Fermentation involves bundles of tobacco leaves being stacked carefully and once again being kept at a certain level of humidity. During fermentation the leaves will release ammonia but retain all the fragrant oils that give each kind of tobacco its distinct flavour. When this vital stage of fermentation is complete,  the leaves are baled and aged. Aging can take anything from a few months to many years depending on the manufactures specifications.
