ECMI Awarded Exporter of the Year
The story of Villiger Ireland Ltd. is a story of the dogged persistence of one man. In 1990, Gerry 0'Dowd, then factory manager of Hofnor Ireland, watched in dismay as parent company problems forced the closure of its Irish subsidiary. The tragedy was more than personal, seventy others lost their Jobs as the eleven year-old cigar company folded. Rather than stand idly by, Gerry embarked on a quest to restart production at the Ballaghdereen plant - an eight-month odyssey which was to take him to Europe and the US in the search for a partner. He finally struck gold when he secured a deal with Villiger Sohne Germany. The result recommencement of operations in March 1991. Villiger Ireland would produce Villiger Sohne products, while developing a market for their own brands. The rest is history. Plant staffing has increased steadily since 1991, and production is close to pre-closure levels. 90% of current output is destined for export, and new foreign markets are now being examined. Gerry 0'Dowd's persistence and vision make him and Villiger Ireland worthy winner of the DHL National Export Award.
